Thekkady lies in Idukki district of Kerala. Thekkady is the entry point for tourists to the Periyar Tiger Reserve(PTR). PTR spreads between Idukki and Pathanamthitta districts of Kerala. Inside PTR lies the famous Sabarimala Temple deicated to Hindu deity Lord Ayyappa. At Thekkady the Forest Department arranges boat rides through the backwaters of Mullaperiyar dam which lies inside PTR. On the banks of these waters one can spot wild animals like Tiger, Elephant, Gaur, deer etc. The forest depatment arranges guided trekking through the Reserve.
