Chembra Peak is the highest peak in Wayanad district of Kerala. It is 2100m high and is a trekkers paradise. The whole of Wayanad district can be seen from the peak when it is not foggy. On the way to the top there is a heart shaped lake which has water through out the year. A large part of the mountain is forest and a lot of animals including elephants, deers, leopards etc. Rest region has large grasslands, tea estates and human habitation. The grasslands are ideal places for adventure camping. The District Tourism Promotion Council of Wayanad district arranges camping utilities and guides for trekkers (contact ph:0493-6202134,712). One needs to get trekking permission from the Vana Samrakshana Samiti Office at 2km from Meppadi on the way to Chembra (contact ph:+919495757681). Do contact early to ensure that the trek rout eis open to trekkers. At the Forest Office you need to give your name and get a sealed permission which you have to show to an officer near a watch tower on the trek route. The trek starting point is an estate called Chembra estate.
Best time to trek the Chembra Peak is during the post monsoon time of November to April.
Good hotels suiting any budgets are available at Kalpetta and Sulthan Bathery. Small fast food outlets are available in Meppadi town. Many resorts are available throughout the Wayanad district.
KeralaSRTC and KarnatakaSRTC runs direct buses from Bangalore to Kalpetta. From Kalpetta both KeralaSRTC and private buses are available to Meppadi. From Meppadi the Chembra estate is 7km away which can be reached by autos or jeeps available in Meppadi town.
