Athirappilly is a village which lies in Thrissur district of Kerala. Athirappilly is home to a majestic waterfall named as Athirappilly waterfalls formed on the Chalakkudy Puzha (Chalakkudy river). The Athirappilly waterfalls is 80m high. The road leading to the falls reaches the top of the falls. The river there flows through a huge network of rocks. One can also get down to the bottom of the falls. The beauty of Athirappilly waterfalls have been captured in many South Indian films. Tourist attractions near to Athirappilly are Vazhachal Falls (5km away) and Thumboormuzhi Dam(12km away). Vazhachal Falls is a small waterfall on the Chalakkudy Puzha upstream Athirappilly falls. Tourism Department maintains a small park at Vazhachal. Thumboormuzhi Dam is an irrigation dam built on the Chalakkudy Puzha where a portion of the water from the river splits in to two canals namely Edathukara canal (left side canal) and Valathukara canal (right side canal). These canals are the backbone of the irrigation for the nearby villages. During summers almost whole of the river water will be directed towards the canals and the river bed will be visible. Apart from these attractions there are water theme parks near by Athirappilly namely Silver Storm and Dream World.
Best time to visit Athirappilly is during September to February.
There are hotels and resorts available near by the falls itself. Other option is to stay at Chalakkudy (30km away).
To reach through Route 1 KeralaSRTC , KarnatakaSRTC and Indian Railways runs direct services Bangalore to Chalakkudy. From Chalakkudy KeralaSRTC , TNSTC and Private buses are available to Athirapilly. Private cabs are available at Chalakkudy. The road from Chalakkudy to Athirappilly is very scenic. To reach through Route 2 SETC runs direct services Bangalore to Pollachi. From Pollachi TNSTC buses are available to Chalakkudy which pass through Valparai. Another option is to reach Coimbatore in direct SETC or KarnatakaSRTC or Indian Railways services from Bangalore. From Coimbatore TNSTC buses are available to Pollachi. The road from Pollachi to Athirappilly passes through forests and is very scenic.
